Newcastle Knights coach Adam O’Brien has a major decision to make before the NRL season kicks off. After a shaky first trial match, questions have emerged about Jack Cogger’s suitability at halfback. O’Brien will be under the spotlight to get this call right. He must find a solution that provides stability in the halves. Knights fans are hoping he makes the right choice and sticks to it.
With young playmaker Fletcher Sharpe showing promise, the focus shifts to finding the right partner to guide him through his first full NRL season. Based on the opening trial, Tyson Gamble appears to be the best option at halfback providing the energy, experience and kicking game needed to lead the attack.
Sharpe and Gamble the Best Bet for Newcastle
Gamble’s aggression and game management make him a natural fit for the No.7 jersey. He’s a vocal leader and isn’t afraid to take charge of a game—something Newcastle desperately needs. Meanwhile Sharpe’s strengths lie in his instinctive play but he needs a steady presence beside him to allow him to develop at his own pace.
The coaching staff have emphasised Sharpe’s ability to chime in at the right moments rather than take full control from day one. That’s why pairing him with an experienced half like Gamble makes sense. Anything else and the Knights risk another poor start to the season, which will ultimately lead to another mediocre end of season result.
Matt Arthur Pushing for a Starting Spot
One of the biggest positives from the trial match was Matt Arthur’s performance at hooker. The young dummy-half looked sharp and provided much-needed speed around the ruck—something that has been lacking in Newcastle’s attack.
On the other hand Jayden Brailey had some solid moments but still lacks the attacking spark needed to take the Knights' spine to the next level. His first-half break highlighted this issue when he failed to find a flying Fletcher Sharpe in support—a pass that could have led to a 60-metre try. These are the small details that can make or break a team’s season.
Eels Dominate Exposing Knights Weaknesses
While the Knights struggled to find their rhythm, the Parramatta Eels were the better side across the park. Their combinations clicked early after their forward pack set the tone. It’s a positive sign for Parramatta heading into 2025 while Newcastle now has clear areas to improve before Round 1.
